"This honest and personal account of what a cancer patient may experience can provide hope and insight to cancer patients, the medical and psychological personnel who treat them, and to cancer patients' caregivers and loved ones," states Kindley. Within days of being diagnosed with cancer, DeeDee found meaning and purpose. With a core desire to live, she summoned courage and strength from within her to confront emotionally and physically difficult circumstances while maintaining an unwavering belief in her ability to live. She kept a journal of her thoughts and feelings during her nine day stay in the hospital and throughout her experience as a means of catharsis and in hope of helping other people fight and survive their battles with cancer.
Heart Knots ~ The Story of a True Survivor is based on DeeDee's journal of raw thoughts and emotions as she takes the reader through her experience. The book includes three sections. Part one details her story and is a testimony to the human spirit. It also mentions the fact that Kindley was part of a Cancer Cluster receiving a great deal of media attention that was found by the California State Health Department in her high school graduating class in the affluent San Francisco East Bay town of Danville, California. Part two of the book demystifies the disease and includes what DeeDee believes her "secrets" of survival to be, cancer facts and fiction, how therapeutic support groups affect survival, a method for opening emotionally difficult communication, and describes the role of an active patient. The final section serves as a reference guide filled with important resources for cancer patients and their families or caregivers.
